Science at OBS: Curiosity in Action!

These first two months of the school year have been full of experiments, discoveries, and exciting challenges for our students across all year levels. From creating a nutritious brand  or edible cell models (some even in the form of delicious cakes!), exploring how the Van de Graaff generator works, and calculating the value of g right here at OBS, our labs have been buzzing with curiosity and creativity.

At the heart of the Science Department’s work is our commitment to nurturing inquiry, collaboration, and scientific thinking. Whether it’s through hands-on experiments, discussions about environmental issues, or extended investigations, we aim to develop the skills of young scientists: critical thinking, teamwork, problem-solving, and reflection essentials not only in IB and IGCSE Science but for life beyond the classroom.

This year, our students are also taking part in exciting national and international science competitions. The IGCSE Science Competition Club has launched four innovative projects:

  • Turning seaweed into biodegradable plastic
  • Developing probiotic fruit coatings to preserve food
  • Using phytoremediation to clean oil spills
  • Creating sustainable and nutritious food products

These projects embody what science is all about: creativity, sustainability, and real-world impact.

In addition, our students are invited to join the Food Contest Católica, a national challenge organized by the Universidade Católica Portuguesa’s School of Biotechnology. Participants will design healthy, affordable, and environmentally friendly recipes, contributing to the future of sustainable food while developing key IB CAS skills in innovation, teamwork, and community engagement.

From Biology to Physics, Chemistry to Environmental Systems, the Science Department continues to inspire students to ask questions, explore answers, and see the world through the eyes of a scientist.
