The recent CAS trip to Miranda do Douro was an enriching and transformative experience, seamlessly blending adventure, education, and service within a breathtaking natural setting. Over several days, 20 Forms 11 and 12 students immersed themselves in a series of meaningful activities designed to deepen their understanding of environmental conservation while fostering personal growth, collaboration, and critical reflection on their impact.
The journey commenced with an excursion to a vulture feeding station in Bruçó, where students, under the guidance of Biologist Iván Gutiérrez, gained a profound insight into the crucial role vultures play in maintaining ecological balance. Actively participating in habitat conservation efforts, they developed practical skills in wildlife preservation and a heightened awareness of the global challenges surrounding biodiversity. This hands-on experience reinforced the importance of responsible environmental stewardship and the interconnectedness of all living organisms.
Next, students engaged in an ecological restoration project, planting acorns of native flora species under the expertise of Forestry Engineer Alejandro Nieto. This initiative underscored the vital role of reforestation in combating climate change and preserving biodiversity. As students worked collaboratively to plant seeds that will one day flourish into trees, they strengthened their sense of responsibility towards sustainable environmental practices. The panoramic vistas from Miradouro Carrascalinho provided an awe-inspiring backdrop for reflection, emphasising the long-term impact of their contributions and the power of collective action in fostering a healthier planet.
A highlight of the trip was the visit to AEPGA Donkey Sanctuary, a cherished partner in our CAS initiatives over the past three and a half years. Here, students met specialist Emanuel Catarino and delved into the sanctuary’s efforts to protect the endangered Mirandese donkey.
By the conclusion of the trip, it was evident that each student had undergone a journey of both intellectual and personal growth. The experiences in Miranda do Douro transcended mere participation in activities; they were pivotal moments of skill development, resilience-building, and ethical contemplation. As students returned home, they carried with them not only cherished memories but also a strengthened commitment to making meaningful contributions to their communities and the wider world.
